More Uptowne upgrade furnishings to be installed this year

The Town of Olds has ordered and obtained $45,000 worth of street furnishings for its upgrade to 50th Avenue.

They include bike racks, garbage cans and decorative benches like the ones installed last year, plus “picnic tables in some select locations,” according to chief operating officer Doug Wagstaff.

He says those furnishings arrived a couple of weeks ago.

During a meeting with the Uptowne Olds committee, Wagstaff said town staff will now double check with business owners in the area to ensure both sides are “still on the same pages” regarding where those items should be placed.

“We have quite a number of bike racks, trash receptacles, recycling bins and we are going to try – we're going to pilot three picnic tables as well, to see how that goes,” Wagstaff said.

He said Brian Thompson, who owns a building in Uptowne is one property owner interested to obtain a picnic table and see how popular it is with shoppers.

He said in general, the idea is to place the furnishings on sidewalk bump-outs so people see them.

“Our plan for this year is to go from the end there at ATB down to Our Flames Restaurant and do the streetscape this year. So that would be the sidewalks, bump-outs and street lights,” Wagstaff said.
