The Olds Calico Capers Square and Round Dance Club is holding a celebration on Sunday, Oct. 16 to mark 65 years of the club's existence.

Club coordinator Marlene Potter says the event, which will take place at the Evergreen Centre from 2 to 5 p.m., will include a dance and plaque presentation to celebrate the milestone.

A potluck supper will follow. Roast beef and baked potatoes will be supplied. Guests are asked to bring a salad or dessert.

Potter says the Olds club is one of the longest-running square and round dance clubs in the province, along with one club each in Red Deer and Rocky Mountain House.

When asked what keeps the club going, Potter says, “people like to come out and dance,” although she says attendance has declined over the years.

“All of the square dance clubs across Canada are dropping in people because they're all getting older and the younger people aren't interested, or they're too busy doing a hundred things with their kids,” Potter says.

Currently, about 20 people belong to the club, which holds dances at the Evergreen Centre every Wednesday night from the beginning of October until the middle of April.
