A man who pushed a woman down a flight of stairs and then punched her in the face and body has been jailed.

Michael Ryan Goodine, 39, pleaded guilty in Didsbury provincial court on March 30 to a charge of assault causing bodily harm and a charge of uttering a threat.

Goodine and the victim got into an argument in an Olds residence on Dec. 1, 2015, court heard.

Goodine then pushed the woman down the 10-step staircase before striking her repeatedly.

During the assault he asked the victim if she would like to “know what it's like not to breathe.”

The woman suffered scrapes and bruises in the assault.

Following the guilty pleas, the Crown withdrew a second charge of uttering threats and a charge of assault with a weapon.

Asked by the judge if he had anything to say before sentencing, Goodine said no.

Calling the attack “very anti-social behaviour” and giving the accused credit for 84 days in pre-sentence custody, Judge J. Shriar ordered Goodine jailed for one day.

She also placed him on probation for 18 months, prohibited him from possessing weapons, fined him $200, and ordered him to donate $400 to the Mountain View Food Bank.
