Lots of spooky events will be on in the Uptowne area of Olds this Friday and Saturday afternoon/evening.

For the second year in a row the Olds and District Boys and Girls Club is hosting a Haunted House in their building on 51st Street, just west of 50th Avenue.

On Friday night (Oct. 24) there'll be a special sneak preview of the Haunted House from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. On Saturday, Oct. 25, tours of the Haunted House will be available as part of Fright Night, from 3 to 8 p.m.

Uptowne Olds co-ordinator Deb Aitken says there will be some changes in the Haunted House this year.

“They are creating some new scary props for the Haunted House,” she says. “They're working together with kids at the high school, in the drama club and the wood-working club. It's a spooky sneak peek.”

Aitken says the Haunted House will be especially scary on Friday night.

Officially it's for ages 13 and up, but Aitken says 12-year-olds for example, won't be turned away if it's felt they can handle it.

“If kids under 13 feel brave enough, organizers will let them in,” she says.

From 3 to 5 p.m. activities in Uptowne Olds include trick or treating at participating businesses, face painting and Griselda the fortune teller at the Mountain View Museum, plus the Haunted House.

From 5 to 8 p.m. activities in the Caluori Pavilion, just off 54th Street, include a new event – a free community supper sponsored by the town. A family dance will be held there as well.

Other fun activities there include a costume parade starting at 5:30 p.m. (prizes will be awarded). There will also be performances by Move Yourself Dance Studio from 5 to 6:30 p.m., and music throughout the evening (5 to 8 p.m.) courtesy of 96.5 CKFM and Rock 104.

Aitken says the community supper is new; as is the fact that some activities have been moved indoors to the pavilion.

“There was food and entertainment last year but it was outdoors,” she says.

Aitken says food during the community supper will be appropriate to the event.

“It's going to be some spooky treats,” she says. “There's going to be hot dogs and chips and goodies in a Halloween theme.”

However, there will be no beer gardens.

Aitken is hopeful the weather will be good Friday night and Saturday afternoon/evening.

Fright Night organizers are still looking for anyone interested in donating Halloween decorations and/or volunteering to help set up or take down displays during the event.

The Olds Rotary Club's annual Harvest Ball also takes place this coming Saturday night. Aitken is confident the two events won't conflict with each other.

“That one (the Harvest Ball)) starts later so if people need to get to it, they can still bring the kids (to Fright Night) and then sneak out to get to their event,” she says. “We're hoping it won't be too much of a conflict. Of course, we try to plan things to not conflict with other events, but this time there is one.”
