A spokesperson for TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) is impressed by the amount of support the organization got for a rally it held in Olds.

The rally, held Sept. 24 in the Evergreen Centre, attracted about 150 people representing 30 chapters. They came from as far away as Viking and the Rocky Mountain House area.

Corey Favell-Thompson, vice-president of the Olds chapter, helped organize the event.

She asked various businesses to donate items for door prizes.

“It just totally amazed me. Totally amazed me. It was the small-town businesses pretty much that supported us. I just can't say enough about small-town Olds,” she says.

The rally itself was a great success, Favell-Thompson says.

“It was just a fun day of various chapters. We did various skits and songs throughout the day.”

The focus was on healthy eating and healthy lifestyles.

A presentation from the Canadian Diabetes Association underlined that. Participants learned that the incidence of diabetes is increasing.

Favell-Thompson joined the Olds chapter of TOPS about two years ago.

It was a momentous time because she was also diagnosed with cancer. Eventually, she lost her right leg as a result of the disease.

“The fact that this group has surrounded me with support and encouragement -- and not just with living a healthy lifestyle, but through my cancer journey as well – has just been amazing,” she says.
