The Olds Lions Club is asking the town to consider extending its lease on the O.R. Hedges campground.

The service group's current lease expires in December 2017.

In a delegation to the policies and priorities committee on April 11, representatives from the club talked about some of the improvements that have been made to the campground.

Some of those included: O-NET Wi-Fi, security cameras, two table shelters for tent users, new signage and an outdoor dishwashing facility.

The club has also donated thousands of dollars back to the community in the years it has operated the campground.

Between 2004 and 2015, the club has donated $655,047, with over $90,000 going to youth initiatives.

"We are firm believers in the youth of this community. They are our future, no question about it," said the club's Alan Taylor.

Taylor added those contributions wouldn't have been possible without acquiring the campground.

The Lions Club's expenditures on O.R. Hedges between 2004 and 2012 have been $599,155, with the vast majority of that money spent locally.

"You certainly run the campground better than the Town of Olds did at the time," said Olds mayor Judy Dahl.
