Summer Oldstice this Saturday

Rain or shine the annual Summer Oldstice street festival will be in full swing this Saturday in historic Uptowne Olds. There will be activities happening along 50th Avenue, from Centennial Park to Shoppers Drug Mart.

A pancake breakfast will open the day at 9 a.m. ñ you can find it in the small parking area between Vista Travel and Olds Liquor and Beer ñ followed by street market and sidewalk sales along 50th Avenue beginning at 10 a.m. There will be kids' horseshoe throwing for the young ones and a beer garden for the older ones. A historic tour of Olds on the historic people mover will be happening throughout the day, and a free showing of Mary Hays' storytelling play, See Olds First, will be featured on the Oldstice Street Fair Stage, in the same pancake breakfast parking lot.

Best bet is to just head down to Uptowne Olds on Saturday morning, and go with the flow.

Local bikers ride for local resident

The parking lot outside the Night Owl will be roaring this Saturday morning, as local bikers, headed up by the Bearded Skulls Brotherhood riding club, gather for a fundraising run for Olds resident Cindy Smith, as well as Kristen Holt of Calgary. The ride, which heads out toward Sundre at 11 a.m., is in support of both breast cancer and lupus, an autoimmune disease affecting one in every thousand Canadians, according to Lupus Canada, raising money with its 10-dollar entry fee.

After a stop in Spruce View, the ride will return to the Night Owl for live bands, a barbecue and beer garden, along with a silent auction, prizes and regular venue entertainment.

Landlord-tenant dispute continues

A dispute between a tenant and landlord regarding an Olds property continues.

Former Braeburn Estates resident Shelley McInnis picketed in front of RVB Management recently saying she did not receive her full damage deposit, despite leaving her place clean and without damage. She says she has documentation from the property manager to back that up.

RVB says she didn't pay her utilities.

McInnis concedes she owed $41 but she says that that's a long way from the $167 she says RVB has charged her for general cleaning, including carpet cleaning.

Clarification

A story in the May 23 edition of the Olds Albertan headlined Operating budget slightly higher requires clarification.

The budget for the parade was increased by $500 to $2,500. Increased costs for candy are only a small part of that hike. Inflation in general is another factor. The parade budget has been set at $2,000 for many years.
