A house fire that occurred in Olds on Family Day (Monday, Feb. 20) was still under investigation late last week, according to acting fire chief Scott Chant.

As a result, the cause of the blaze had not yet been determined.

The call came in at approximately 4:15 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 20. The fire was in a single-family residence in the 5100 block of 44th Street.

Three units and seven firefighters responded. When they got there, fire crews discovered smoke and flames in one room of the home. Residents were not home at the time.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze "within minutes," Chant says. Fire damage was contained to one room. However, a news release stated there's smoke damage throughout the home.

"The Town of Olds Fire Department credits the quick-thinking neighbour who heard the fire alarm coming from the home and called 911," the fire department news release says.

"The fire department also credits the wise decision of the neighbour - who had a key to the unoccupied home -- for resisting the urge to enter the house and for waiting outside the structure until fire crews arrived."

Chant says because the fire is still being investigated, a damage estimate has not yet been determined.
