A dangerous motorcycle ride along snow-lined Highway 2 on Nov. 14 where police estimated the bike's speed exceeded 200 kilometres an hour ended in an arrest and 11 charges for a Calgary man.
At about 1:30 p.m., a motorist on the highway called police to report a motorcyclist was heading north at a high rate of speed.
Using a stationary laser speed-tracking device, members of the Airdrie Integrated Traffic Unit clocked the motorcycle's speed near Crossfield at 158 km/h but members believed the motorcycle was moving much faster than that at other points as it travelled north.
Because of the motorcycle's high rate of speed, police were not able to catch up to the bike until it encountered heavier traffic near Olds.
Members of the Olds and Didsbury RCMP were alerted to the motorcyclist's actions at about 1:45 p.m. and shortly after, once the motorcyclist noticed a police vehicle following him, he made a “controlled exit” from the highway into the east ditch and ditched the bike just south of the interchange of highways 2 and 27.
The suspect then tried to flee on foot but Alberta Sherriffs were able to “tackle” and arrest the man, police said.
No one was injured during the arrest and police suspect the motorcycle the suspect was driving, a Kawasaki sports bike, was stolen since it was “heavily repainted,” police said.
Spencer Douglas Wilson, 24, is charged with dangerous driving, altering a vehicle identification number, possessing a vehicle with an altered vehicle identification number, possessing stolen property, two counts of unlawfully possessing another person's identity document, failing to produce a driver's licence, having an improper class of driver's licence, two counts of obstructing a peace officer and breach of recognizance.
Police said Wilson had been released from the Calgary Remand Centre the day before the motorcycle incident.
