Future full-time councillor idea floated

Coun. Heather Ryan raised that possibility during a town council meeting
olds-news

OLDS — The town may eventually have to look at making its councillors full-time, rather than part-time, as they are now, Coun. Heather Ryan says.

Ryan made that statement during an early November council meeting, saying the idea came from James Cummings of the town’s Ad Hoc Citizens Committee on Council Remuneration (AHCCCR).

According to Ryan, Cummings indicated that eventually the town will need to look at whether it’s more efficient to have a full-time council rather than part time councillors.

“That’s obviously not going to happen today – maybe 10 years, 20 years down the road,” she said.

Ryan made that point during discussion on an AHCCCR recommendation to include preparation time when assessing the compensation councillors should receive for the work they do.

“If you don’t talk to the council of the day as to what amount of time they’re spending, or get a real good realization of how much time they’re spending, then you’ll never be able to decide what that tipping point is going to be," she said.
