An Olds firefighter has received a 20-year exemplary service medal.

Training officer Justin Andrew was presented with that medal during the Alberta Fire Chiefs Association Conference in Red Deer on June 11. He was the only Olds Fire Department member to receive a medal this year.

Andrew has been with the OFD for just under 21 years.

He notes the award is presented not just for the number of years served, but as the name of the medal indicates, for exemplary service.

ìIt's a great honour,î he says. ìIt's more than just a time thing, you do have to have the exemplary service. Basically they look at things like if you've ever had discipline, or if you're just one of those guys who just show up type thing.î

Andrew says he's entering an elite group within the department. He says 10 members of the approximately 45-member OFD have also received the award.
