Deer Meadow School capped off the 2012-13 school year on June 14 with an Academy Awards-themed event that recognized students for all their hard work in optional classes or "academies."

Students acted in skits, danced and played musical instruments while various awards were also handed out.

"It was the culmination of our option classes for the grade 7 and 8s at our school," said Amy Christiansen, a teacher at DMS.

There are about 260 students in grades 7 and 8 at the school.

In the fine arts, students can choose from a variety of subjects such as band, dance and theatre or sports academies that include activities such as hockey, track events and football. Leadership academies include things such as the Interact Club (youth Rotary) or Rachel’s Challenge, which builds community through kindness and compassion. Students can also choose to visit the Horizon School and build goodwill with the students there. There are about 50 different academies available to students.

"They choose to their strengths what class they want to take," Christiansen said.

The leadership students learn skills such as public speaking, event coordination and community involvement.

In the fine arts academy, the female supporting role award went to Lydia Van Soest, while the male in a supporting role went to Ashton Jordet. The female in a leading role award went to Hailey Larson while the male in a leading role award went to Glenn Lockie.

In the athletics academy, the female supporting role went to Brooklyn Kardos while the male supporting role went to Connor Dixon. The leading role for a female in athletics went to Isabelle Layden while the male leading role was Cole Urbanowski.

In the leadership academy, the supporting female award went to Kallie Burk while Roger Klinck was chosen as the male supporting award winner. The leading female award went to Rose Chong Wu while the leading male was Richard Dunn. Vanessa Mertens won the Mr. McCleary band award.
