Deer Meadow lock-in called a success

An event in which École Deer Meadow School students locked themselves in the school overnight to raise money for the Wounded Warriors Canada organization was a great success, an organizer says.

“It went really well,” Noah Korver says. “We had $2,275 when we counted it and we've had donations come in after the fact.”

When Korver was interviewed, the final total from the event, held in early December, was still being tallied.

Wounded Warriors Canada supports military veterans, first responders and their families with everything from health services to assistance in transitioning to civilian life.

Korver organized the lock-in along with fellow Grade 8 student Riley Chopko. They also had help from some other students, along with teacher Sandi Hoppins, who conducts leadership and interact classes.

In the end, about 88 kids took part in the event, including 76 paying participants and some Olds High School (OHS) students in that school's leadership program.

Next year Korver will be an OHS student. He's not sure yet whether he'll organize a lock-in for Wounded Warriors in that school as well.

He and Chopko began organizing the lock-in in October. However, they had to cancel and reschedule the event for December. They learned a lot about just how complicated it can be to organize something on that scale.

Korver says if he does organize a similar activity next year, “I would just take on more people sooner, rather than having to cancel -- and then desperately beg.”

“It was a little bit (nerve-racking) at the end there, but it all worked out pretty well. If I were to do it again I would know what I was doing more this time, so I'd kind of be able to manage it a bit better,” he says.
