Country star in pregnancy care centre fundraiser

Country singer Paul Brandt is lending his hands – as well as his hockey skills -- to a fundraiser for the Olds branch of the Central Alberta Pregnancy Care Centre (CAPCC).

That fundraiser is a three-on-three hockey tournament which takes place Saturday, Oct. 11 at the Didsbury Memorial Complex from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. A silent auction will be held as well.

The CAPCC "gives support to women, their partners and their families regarding issues around unplanned pregnancy," according to Olds branch director Rita Fahlman. The branch has been open for about seven months now.

The suggested entry fee is $2,000 per team. Organizers are hoping to raise $16,000.

Fahlman says centre officials are hopeful the tournament will become an annual event.

“Our hope is it will turn into a celebrity tournament,” she says.

Brandt has committed to play in the tournament. However, Fahlman says he will not be playing a concert during the event.

“Our hopes are that next year, it'll be a bigger event; his friends come as well, and it'll be a celebrity tournament,” she says.

Fahlman says Brandt's team has been joking about an ironic way to maybe raise more money for the centre.

“They were going to see who wanted him to play with them or who didn't – they thought it's possible people would pay more money for him not to play on their team. He'd be better at singing than playing hockey,” she says with a laugh.
