The town of Olds has passed bylaws making changes to its Cornerstone Area Structure Plan.

The plan incorporates residential business and recreational developments north of Highway 27 and east of 70th Avenue.

"It's going to have all the amenities in that corner," Doug Wagstaff, the town's chief operating officer, told reporters recently.

As reported earlier, the town plans to undertake a $3-million project to provide more baseball and soccer fields in the community at that location. The horseshoe pits might also be relocated there from their current location in Centennial Park.

Construction on the new fields could begin this spring.

A toboggan park is also envisioned in the development.

Consultant Jordan Cleland is raising money to provide "extras" for the playing fields, like enhanced batting cages, optimal crowning, bleachers, concession or underground irrigation.

Proposed roads or road extensions have been shifted to accommodate the playing fields. Yet, at the same time, they're designed to deter traffic heading toward businesses from travelling through residential areas.

Pathways are envisioned as well, to connect pedestrians to various attractions, including the playing fields.

Development in the area will hook up with the West View area planned to the north of the Cornerstone area.

A storm ditch will be expanded to accommodate an anticipated increase in volume from developments in the area. The playing fields will now be buffered by that storm ditch.

"That was something that was aesthetically pleasing as well as best utilization of space," Wagstaff said.
