Collecting furniture, etc., for Fort Mac evacuees

An Olds trucking firm has decided to specialize in what they collect for Fort McMurray evacuees.

They're now concentrating on big stuff like furniture, as well as gaming systems like Xboxes.

Dana Overwater, one of the owners of CLS (Central Logistic Solutions) says they've heard that's a huge need, not only for those whose homes have been burnt, but also because according to Overwater, many unburnt homes have been looted.

In addition, her understanding is at least some renters did not have rental insurance.

“The immediate need went out fast with the smaller things that people need right now while they're camping or whatever.

“But all those people who are returning home will go home probably feeling a little devastated. Even though their home wasn't burnt down, things have gone missing and you just have to start over,” she says.

She notes furniture and those kinds of things are “big-ticket” items, and pretty expensive for people on a limited budget.

So the company is collecting those things between now and mid-June when they've been told they can go up to Fort McMurray and make what they've collected available to evacuees.

“We're just going to open it up like a thrift store, but it's free. So people can just come down and get things that they need to start rebuilding their world,” Overwater says.

Overwater is impressed with the kind of items they're receiving.

“People have provided brand new furniture or barely used – like La-Z-Boys and stuff. It's phenomenal,” she says.”
