Citizens of the Year, Humanitarian of the Year announced

The Rotary Club of Olds has named its 2014 Citizen of the Year, Youth Citizen of the Year and Humanitarian of the Year.

The Rotary Club of Olds has named its 2014 Citizen of the Year, Youth Citizen of the Year and Humanitarian of the Year.

Gary Gaudette is the Citizen of the Year, Kathy Kemmere is the Humanitarian of the Year and Shaelyn Moritz is the Youth Citizen of the Year.

"Gary Gaudette is a tireless volunteer in Olds and is being recognized for his efforts with the 2014 Citizen of the Year award," a news release says. "Gary can often be found behind the scenes orchestrating things and sharing his humour and energy with those around him."

Kemmere is receiving her award for her many years of community work, caring for those who are in need in Olds and area.

The Humanitarian of the Year is chosen on the following criteria:

* Recognizes a person(s) in need and provides assistance whether it be a helping hand or a compassionate ear;

* Is involved in aspects of the community where people's needs are paramount in importance;

* Personality traits of kindness, generosity, friendly and compassion are evident in this person;

* Is generally involved where a person's quality of life can be improved upon.

* Gives service above self, a motto of the Rotary Club.

Olds Rotarians are impressed with Moritz, the Youth Citizen of the Year as well.

"Shaelyn has a balanced history of community involvement and shows high potential to contribute to society as she moves into her post secondary education," the news release says.

The Citizen and Youth Citizen of the Year are evaluated on the following criteria:

Service Above Self

1. Demonstrates a willingness to consistently put community and people's needs ahead of their own.

Community Development

1. Demonstrate a desire to make the community a better place for all its residents.

2. Is heavily involved in the various activities that support, build and develop a better community.

Community Service

1. Is involved in various projects throughout the community.

2. Demonstrates the ability to work co-operatively and in harmony with other community members.

Personal Volunteerism

1. Is not hesitant to become involved when and wherever a need arises.

2. Dedicates their time and is readily available to fill a need.
