Charges laid after crossbow pointed at police

Olds RCMP officers responding to an argument were confronted by a man who aimed a crossbow at them.

Cpl. Michael Black says the incident occurred on July 18. At about 12:45 p.m. that day, police received a report that threats involving a knife had been made during an argument.

"The members went out to a rural residence east of town, located a suspect at a residence," Black says.

"Members confronted the suspect there. A crossbow was produced by the suspect, aimed at the police," he adds. "The police were able to have the suspect drop the weapon and he was taken into custody without any injuries to himself or us."

Chris Allan Birch, 35, faces charges of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, two counts of assault on a police officer with a weapon and mischief under $5,000.
