Bowden remuneration issue over procedure, not pay

Bowden town council's debate over remuneration was not over how much they get paid – that was settled earlier, Mayor Robb Stuart says.

Bowden town council's debate over remuneration was not over how much they get paid – that was settled earlier, Mayor Robb Stuart says. Instead, he says, the issue was whether council saw any need to change a procedural bylaw that deals with that matter.

And the answer was no.

“I've looked it over and I don't think there are any changes,” Stuart said during council's Aug. 25 meeting. “Most of it is out of the Municipal Government Act.”

He said he didn't want to rehash how much councillors are compensated for their efforts because that was discussed in February, when council agreed to new rates.

The only concern he had was with a provision which says, “the meetings of council committees shall be established by resolution of each committee, and the public must be given notice by advertising on a public notice board or in the town newsletter at least 24 hours before the meeting.”

“I don't know if that means we have to stick a notice up at the post office and I don't want to create problems for people, but I'm just wondering how that should be interpreted,” Stuart said.

Development Officer Jade Prefontaine said it's her understanding that the town newsletter is an “appropriate means” to advertise such meetings and that at least most committee meetings are advertised that way.

Coun. Sheila Church suggested word of the time and place for meetings could be relayed via the ag society.

“Try to get more people interested,” Stuart said.

“Yeah,” Church replied.
