An Olds resident and her friends are planning a barbecue lunch to raise money for Fort McMurray evacuees.

Tamara Jeges says she and her friends got the idea when they saw how much others were doing for those affected by the wildfires in the Fort McMurray area.

The event will take place Saturday May 28 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Centennial Park.

Five dollars will buy you a hotdog, bag of chips and a pop. A bake sale will also be held.

Jeges says the fundraiser will be held rain or shine.

“It helps that there's a cookshack and then there's the gazebo there for some shelter,” she says. And we have a little cover tent that we can set up as well.”

“I saw everybody doing their collections for donations, I kind of thought of something that we could do to help out and I got talking to my friends. It started out as a pancake breakfast and then it kind of turned into a hotdog barbecue instead,” Jeges says.

“It's just kind of something that we can do to give back and help them out.”

Jeges says she's getting help on the project from her family, her friends and their families.

“So there's a big group of us doing it so far.”

She notes her dad, Steve, is a retired volunteer firefighter. He's concerned about the fires in the Fort McMurray area.
