Allegedly tortured for her beliefs

One of the people who came to Olds last week to protest alleged organ removal from Falun Gong practitioners in China says she was arrested four times and was tortured in labour camps.

Ping Zhang made that statement during an interview with the Albertan (translated by fellow protestor Jenny Yang).

Zhang, 57, said she was arrested because she was a practitioner of Falun Gong, an outlawed religion in China. She said she was not allowed to properly wash and was forced to work 16 hours a day.

She finally managed to get a passport and leave the country in 2015 and now lives in Calgary with her 33-year-old son, who managed to get out in 2008. Zhang said he now works as an accountant for the City of Calgary.

It was not clear how Zhang – or her son -- managed to get permission to leave the country.

Zhang is happy to be in her new home.

“There's no fear in Canada,” she said. “It's a free world, I can express my own opinions, practise my own beliefs, and the people here are so friendly.”
