Texas Mickey Bar owner Jen Casavant’s plan to keep her bar in business cleared a big hurdle this week.

On Monday, May 9, council passed a site-specific land use bylaw amendment adding "adult entertainment establishment" as a permitted use to 4710 50 Ave.

With the amendment, the applicant -- Texas Mickey owner Jen Casavant -- would be able to submit a development permit application for a change of use, adding "adult entertainment establishment" to the property.

The permitted use would only be applicable to that specific property.

The Texas Mickey property is currently zoned as Central Commercial (C1) and the existing use is "drinking establishment."

The vote was 4-2, with councillors Harvey Walsh and Rudy Durieux opposed. Coun. Mary Anne Overwater was absent for the meeting.

The public hearing drew about 20 people in attendance in council chambers. Most came to show their support for the amendment.

Attached to the council agenda were about 20 letters, both for and against the proposal.

Further details on this story will be printed in a later edition of the Albertan.
