Cpl. Dave Lee took over command of the Olds RCMP detachment in the summer of 1991. Following is part of an interview with the Olds Gazette, published in August, 1991.

“As far as Olds is concerned, he said it is not too big that the job overwhelms you.

“You can take the time to stop and say ‘hi' to the people on the street.

“Here you have a balance of everything and you have the freedom to go out for a drive in the afternoon if you want. At division, you're chained to a desk,” Lee added.

“A local teenage band, The Bachs, comprised of Jack Kaiser, Arthur Price, Bernie Swanson and Trevor Stott, won top money in Red Deer, competing in the Expo 66 Talent Show, sponsored by CKRD and Safeway.

The Bachs were judged the best in their class, performing against nine other bands at the Red Deer Fair and then on a Red Deer television show last Friday night against other musical groups.

The judges gave points for musicianship, showmanship, originality and ability.

The boys will receive their cheque for $100 when they take part in the Tommy Hunter Show at the Red Deer Arena.”

The following, published in August, 1916, was provided to the Olds Gazette by the Montreal Family Herald.

“In answer to a query as to whether the extraordinary weather in any way has been brought about by the cannonading in Europe, the following statement has been made by the Meteorological Office at Toronto:

“Historical records enable the meteorologicalist to draw a rainfall curve in Asia Minor back 3,000 years with probably some degree of accuracy.

“More recently, the study of the growth of the yellow pine of Arizona and the sequoia tree of California, as evidenced by their rings, has also enabled officers of the Carnegie Institute to draw a rainfall curve for 3,000 years.

“The curves agree fairly well and show that the climate has been pulsatory throughout this long term, with periods of rainy seasons. Both curves indicate that the one thousand years before Christ were much wetter than at later periods…

“There is not the slightest reason to suppose that the cannonading in Europe has any appreciable effect. I believe it to be negligible in the gigantic workings of nature…

“The variations in rainfall from year to year through long periods are connected with the general circulation of the earth's atmosphere, which is without a doubt affected by changes in solar radiation, which is also variable.

“Professor Abbot, of Mount Wilson Observatory, has shown that the sun is a variable star, changing its output of energy by at least one seventh of the whole.”
