Person crimes declined in two local RCMP detachment areas

MOUNTAIN VIEW COUNTY - RCMP detachments policing Mountain View County have updated council on crime rates over the recent quarter, with both Olds and Didsbury detachments reporting declines in person crimes compared with the same period in 2022.

The Didsbury, Olds, and Sundre RCMP detachment reports included statistics on personal and property crimes, as well work on community priorities.

The Didsbury detachment reported 131 person crimes in the quarter, down from 173 in the same period last year. There were 18 assaults, seven uttering threats, four criminal harassments, three sexual assaults and three other sexual offences reported in the quarter.

There were 37 property crimes reported, down from 92 in the same period last year.

Regarding the community priority to address mental health and domestic violence, Staff Sgt. Stephen Browne said there were 16 mental health-related calls for service within the detachment’s Mountain View County patrol area. 

“The southern Alberta Regional Police and Crisis Team were engaged on many of those calls for service to provide follow-up client support,” he said.

The Olds detachment reported nine person crimes, compared with 21 in the same period last year. There were four assault, four criminal harassments, and one uttering threat calls reported.

There were 32 property crimes reported, down from 57 in the same period in 2022.

The Sundre detachment reported 55 persons crimes, up from 43 in the same period in 2022. There were 18 assaults, 17 criminal harassments, and 16 uttering threat calls reported.

There were 104 property crimes reported, down from 142 in the same period in 2022.

Regarding the community priority of crime reduction, Sgt. Randy Poon said the detachment had 33 mental health calls in the quarter, in 16 of those cases alcohol and drugs were aggravating factors.

Council accepted the reports as information.
