OLDS — Next March, Olds Koinonia Christian School (OKCS) will be hosting the 1A provincial senior girls basketball provincials.

“That's a big deal that brings a lot of people to our community,” head coach Diane Sewell said during an interview with the Albertan. “We’re going to be looking for some businesses to support that.”

Sewell said to her knowledge, OKCS has never hosted the provincials before.

“We're all excited,” she said. “We have a great basketball community here as far as parents and alumni.

“I already have people volunteering for things -- like alumni and community members. I even have a staff member from Olds High who's volunteered.”

Hosting the provincials will be a huge undertaking.

Sewell says it will involve 12 teams that will compete from Wednesday night through Saturday.

There will be a lot of logistics to hammer out.

“Everything from live streaming the performances to just parking,” Sewell said. “There are 15 people per team approximately, including coaches and managers and players, and then you bring your parents and your spectators. It's a lot of people in the building at one time.”

She said the event is so big it can’t be accommodated only in the OKCS gym, so she’s looking for another venue to take some of the load.
