Grizzlys slide hits 10 games

The Olds Grizzlys have now lost their last 10 games dating back to Oct. 26, including three losses last week to the Spruce Grove Saints (3-2), Calgary Mustangs (4-3 in a shootout) and a 5-2 loss on Saturday to the Grande Prairie Storm.

The loss on Saturday leaves the Grizzlys tied for fifth in the south division of the Alberta Junior Hockey League with the Calgary Canucks, eight points behind the Okotoks Oilers.

The string of losses hasn't been due to a lack of effort, according to Grizzlys captain Bart Moran, who spoke following the loss to the Storm.

“I don't think it's a lack of effort on our part. (Saturday) we didn't have a full game, which obviously showed, but we've been trying to keep positive on the bench but over time it's starting to take its toll. We're trying to take a little break from the rink (this week) and try and refocus … and go really hard,” Moran said, noting the most difficult part of the streak is the frustration level on the team starting to rise.

Injuries and a lack of a first strike – in each of the losses the opposition has scored first – has also played a part in the losing streak.

“That's one of our team's goals (is to strike first). We just need to get the first goal scored on us and unfortunately our confidence just sinks,” he said.

Moran said he hopes being on the road for the next two games in Sherwood Park and Lloydminster will help the team rebuild its confidence. The Grizzlys next play at the Olds Sports Complex on Dec. 9 against the Calgary Canucks.
