The Annual Terry Fox Run in Water Valley was another great day on Sunday. The weather was perfect for all participants to run, bike or stroll the beautiful roads and enjoy the fall colour displays of nature.

In all about 120 volunteers and participants came out to raise an amazing $14,000 for cancer research and to keep the Terry Fox legacy going.

Such commitment to a charity steeped in tradition and a goal to have funds go to the research to find a cure for cancer for 37 years now.

Families and friends gathered to enjoy a barbecue after the run and check out the photos and memorabilia of years of past runs. This year we were pleased to have several first-time runners including a young man from Texas visiting our area.

Many families go to great effort to make it home to do our run together which has become a tradition and wonderful time of fellowship.

The Terry Fox Runs take place in over 700 communities across Canada and some 26 countries worldwide. To date, Canadians have raised over $750 million for all types of cancer research projects with the greatest potential impact for patients.

One such project is multiple myeloma molecular monitoring, in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto and Montreal.

Teams will collaborate their research with over 250 patients to advance the ability to characterize and monitor multiple myeloma in the blood and bone marrow to better understand and develop new treatments.

There are many fascinating stories on the terryfox.org website for new research. If you were unable to attend this year's run, donations can be made all year online at www.terryfoxrun.org or support the Cremona School Run on Sept. 28.

The Terry Fox Run is committed to being volunteer run with 84 cents of every dollar going to research, which has remained the mandate and commitment to Terry Fox's wishes.

The Fox family has given endless years to the cause. Even though Betty and Rolly have passed away, Terry's brothers Fred and Darrell and his sister Judith remain involved with the Terry Fox Foundation.

Kudos to all who participated, donated funds, volunteered and supplied food and funds to make our run possible and the success it always has been. Special thanks to the EMS team for patrolling the route.

We are grateful for the continued support and generosity of our wonderful community.

- Mary Thomson is the run's volunteer coordinator
