Mountain View Regional Waste Management Commission (MVRWMC) officials will be appearing before municipal councils in the coming weeks to seek approval for a plan to bring waste into the region from elsewhere in the province, says commission chair Mary Anne Overwater.

The commission oversees waste collection and disposal within the boundaries of Mountain View County. Its facilities include the Didsbury landfill site.

"What we want to do is go to the different municipalities and ask them to make a motion that they will confirm that we can take in extra waste from outside the county," said Overwater.

"The reason we want to do that is so we can reduce the tipping fees for the municipalities. If we bring a maximum of 15,000 extra tonnes of waste, that adds quite a difference in our revenue and then we will be able to decrease the tipping to our municipalities."

The waste being brought in could include construction and demolition waste, she said.

The commission's current bylaws state that only solid waste from within the borders of the county can accepted at the Didsbury landfill.

Commission officials will be appearing before Mountain View County council on Sept. 15, and other councils at various dates in September.

"The commission has to have its budget passed by September 25 so that we have all of the fees out to all the different councils by September 30," she said. "We are in a bit of a crunch and we would really like to get these agreements signed.

"It's not going to be detrimental to anybody or the commission or the municipalities. It is just going to make it a little easier so that when they pay the tipping fee it is only $85 a tonne instead of $115."
