Charges are pending against the driver of one of two vehicles involved in a collision on Highway 27 east of Sundre on Friday afternoon, says Sundre RCMP Cpl. Karl Mandel said at the scene.

The crash occurred on a straight stretch of the highway near Rge. Rd 5.0 when a westbound van crossed the centre line and struck an eastbound pickup truck, said witness Niko Leis, from Sundre.

"The van crossed over the centre line and made contact with the pickup's rear corner panel," Leis said at the scene. "The driver of the truck tried to swerve out of the way and he was sideswiped. I was heading east and it happened right in front of me."

Draygen Lewis also witnessed the crash.

"I saw the van veered over the line. It looked like he lost control or something. It was hard to tell from what I saw," said Wilson, from Cremona.

The driver of the truck was treated on scene by EMS personnel and then taken to Sundre hospital with undisclosed injuries.

The injured man appeared to have a head wound and was speaking to bystanders who came to assist him.

He was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, said Leis.

The pickup truck, which was heavily damaged, ended up in eastbound ditch. The van also entered the eastbound ditch, went through a barbed wire fence and came to rest in an adjacent field.

The driver and male passenger in the van were able to leave their vehicle without assistance.

Debris from the collision was spread over a large area of the highway.

"Looks like charges are going to be pending for the driver of the van," said Mandel.

Highway 27 was reduced to one lane of traffic following the crash.
