Safe grad site approved

CARSTAIRS - Councillors have approved the 2018 safe grad at the former landfill site west of town. The move came during the recent regularly scheduled council meeting.

CARSTAIRS - Councillors have approved the 2018 safe grad at the former landfill site west of town. The move came during the recent regularly scheduled council meeting.

"The grad committee presented a letter asking if they can have safe grad at the former landfill," said CAO Carl McDonnell. "That's historically where they've had them. Part of that is in their proposal they have to show that there will be parents at the gate, only certain people will be allowed in, hours of operation, safe drive home services, the usual stuff."

Industrial lot consolidation

Meanwhile, council received a presentation from Mike Coldwell of Urban Systems regarding the subdivision of several lots in the town's downtown area, east of the Canadian Pacific Railway right-of-way. The lots are known legally as lots 4-14, Block 2, Plan 121.

The subject site comprises 0.42 hectares on 9th Avenue. The applicant is proposing a subdivision to create four new lots from the 11 existing lots included within the site boundary. The site is zoned as medium industrial district (I2).

"Urban Systems came out and did a presentation," he said. "This was just 11 lots that are being consolidated into four lots.  It was more of a housekeeping duty on that one."

CAEP presentation

In other council news, council received a presentation from Kimberley Worthington, executive director for Central Alberta Economic Development Partnership (CAEP), regarding its roving economic development officer (EDO) program.

Council accepted the presentation as information and is not currently looking at the program, he said.

"If there are opportunities we may engage the EDO," he said. "It's more so something we'll look at next fall."

The town has hired a new director of protective services. Dave Ness is currently a Staff Sgt. with the RCMP out of Airdrie but will be starting in Carstairs on Aug. 27 after he retires from the RCMP.
