Mountain View County elects three newcomers

Three newcomers will be joining four incumbents on the new Mountain View County council, according to unofficial results released Monday night. A total of 1,493 votes were cast in the county at 12 polling stations.

Three newcomers will be joining four incumbents on the new Mountain View County council, according to unofficial results released Monday night.

A total of 1,493 votes were cast in the county at 12 polling stations.

ï In Division 1, challenger Dwayne Fulton garnered 257 votes, defeating challenger Jeremy Sayer, who garnered 209 votes.

ï In Division 2, challenger Greg Harris garnered 184 votes, defeating incumbent Patricia McKean who garnered 177.

ï In Division 5, incumbent Angela Aalbers garnered 153 votes, defeating challenger Robin Tudor, who garnered 135.

ï In Division 6, Peggy Johnson won with 160 votes, defeating Wim Nan, who garnered 138 votes, and Jodi Orr, who garnered 80 votes.

"The first plan is to get to know the rest of the members of council," Harris told the Gazette. "There is going to be a period of time feeling our way around and seeing what kind of goals we have in common and start off on those. We are going to be feeling our way along for a while and building our relationships."

Aalbers, who won a second term, said she plans to carry on the work done by the last council.

"I think we just continue with the momentum we've got from the existing council," Aalbers told the Gazette. "We will keep going forward."

Johnson was elected to public office for the first time.

"My first plan is to go to all the training and to learn as much as I can and get off on the right foot and go hard," Johnson told the Gazette.

Fulton was elected to public office for the first time.

"We have to get up to speed on the issues and topics and I will try to get familiar with the new councillors," Fulton told the Gazette. "We are going into the budget discussions soon. I hope we can keep a tight hand on spending and go from there."

Incumbent councillors Bruce Beattie (Division 4), Duncan Milne (Division 3) and Al Kemmere (Division 7) were all acclaimed.

The organizational meeting for the new council is scheduled to take place in council chambers at 9 a.m. on Oct. 25.
