DIDSBURY - The director of the Didsbury High School (DHS) band program has been honoured by a group of his peers for excellence in music teaching.

Kirk Wassmer was awarded with the David Peterkin award by the Nu Alpha chapter of Phi Beta Mu, an honorary band fraternity.

Phi Beta Mu is an international organization with chapters throughout the world.

The local Alberta chapter presented Wassmer with the award for outstanding contribution to band and band music in Alberta.

"It was quite an honour to receive," said Wassmer. "I had no idea. I was totally surprised. I was humbled by it. When I look at the list of past winners, they're all people I consider to be my role models and mentors.

"To be considered in that company really means a lot to me."

The DHS music program consists of the symphonic winds, Grade 9 band and three jazz bands.

"In our school of 260 kids, we have about 150 in the band program," he said.
