The 106th Dogpound Stampede drew a packed audience and more than 100 participants to the grounds for the one-day event last Wednesday.ìWe'll typically come here every year,î said calf-roping competitor Ryan Miller, 28, who attended with his brother Shawn, 30, of Dalemead.ìIt's pretty impressive that in the middle of the week there's a fan crowd and this much participation,î he said. ìIt's impressive.îIn total, 122 signed up for the nine different events that included wild cow milking, something that hasn't been seen at the rodeo for years.ìWe brought it back this year to recognize the 50th anniversary for Mountain View County,î explained Trish McKean, a county councillor and member of the Dogpound Agricultural Society.ìAnd also to remember Doug Rodgers,î McKean's late grandfather.Rodgers, 82, passed away last September. He was one of the founders of the rodeo when it became sanctioned with the FCA, explained granddaughter Tamara Ziebarth.ìHis father, so my great-grandfather, was with Dog Pound Rodeo since it started. He never missed a rodeo,î she said. The cow milking was the first event of the day and seven teams registered. Brett Edge of Cochrane and Lonnie Braybrook took first place.ìIt can be a long day,î said Jordan Hanson of Okotoks, who took first place for bull riding. ìBecause everything is in one day there's a lot of waiting. But it's a nice spot and a wicked buckle,î he said of what makes it all worth the wait.Hanson said it's his second competition at the Dogpound Stampede and he's not the only one to comment on the buckle. The Miller brothers also admitted it's a lure as well.ìI would say it's one of the nicest buckles given away with the FCA,î said Ziebarth. ìWe order them from Texas and they're just beautiful,î she said. ìI can't explain exactly what it is that stands out for them, but we get a lot of comments about them.îThough they weren't there for the buckle, Cassidy Anderson, 17, and Robyn Kennedy, 18, said the rodeo is a yearly event they almost never miss. Born and raised in Water Valley, the two said they come to the rodeo every year to catch a glimpse of the action.ìWe set out here every year and just enjoy it,î said Kennedy. ìI like watching the bull riding the most.î The two carried in flags during the grand entry ceremony. ìI carried the Alberta flag,î said Anderson, explaining that Kennedy carried the FCA flag. The two also carried in the flags during the opening ceremony of the Water Valley Rodeo back in June.ìIt's fun if your horse cooperates,î said Kennedy, who said they didn't have a routine prepared for Dogpound but the event went off without any problems.ìThis was a very good event for us,î said Karen Sinclair, working with a group of volunteers all decked out in pink. The group was out at the rodeo grounds selling 50/50 tickets and ice cream to raise money for breast cancer research. They're part of the Wild Pink Yonder on the Trail to a Cure competition, and are aiming to make Cremona the pinkest little town. They received more than $2,000 in donations Tuesday night during the ranch rodeo where locals are invited out. From the Calcutta over $4,000 was raised. Half was given to the Wild Pink Yonder group and the remainder was divided between the top three rodeo groups.During the local ranch rodeo, people broke into groups and competed in five events: team docking, team penning, cattle wrestling, branding and team sorting. The winning team was the Incredibles with Dusty McKean, Bernie Bergson, Sammie Hamilton and Riley Wilson.RESULTSSteer Riding1. Tyson Tetz (Score 73)2/3. Dayton Johnson (70)2/3. Cooper Zur (70)4/5.
