County candidates outline plans

Mountain View County councillors who are planning to run again in next month's municipal election have outlined some of their hopes and plans for the next term should they be elected.

Mountain View County councillors who are planning to run again in next month's municipal election have outlined some of their hopes and plans for the next term should they be elected.

Councillors Patricia McKean, Al Kemmere, Angela Aalbers, Duncan Milne, Jeremy Sayer and Bruce Beattie have all said they plan to seek new terms.

Kemmere is the councillor for Division 7.

"I think one of the things that I'm excited about in the future is to keep working towards our improvement in the roads process," said Kemmere. "We increased the amount of grader hours on the roads. The development in the east part of the county with the east county shop would be another building of efficiency.

"I also want to work on the development, the continued development, of our relationships with the towns and our urban and county partners around us. I look forward to continue to try to work the rural profile in the Alberta picture."

Angela Aalbers is the councillor for Division 5.

"If I'm re-elected I want to continue to strengthen our relationships with our urban partners and our rural neighbours through the collaboration framework negotiations," said Aalbers.

"I want to focus on building a regional network of municipalities and MLAs to find a solution to providing high-speed Internet to the rural residents.

"I want to continue to focus on long range capital and asset plans. And I want to continue to advocate for better environmental practices and updates to provincial legislation on key issues like the gravel, the asphalt plants and the floodway (in the division)."

McKean, who is the current deputy reeve, is the councillor for Division 2.

"I think in the division important projects include getting the bridge done on Range Road 52, working with Cremona and strengthening the relationship there, and supporting Water Valley residents and the community there," said McKean.

"I also want to continue to support the county as a whole and our province and our urban partners."

She said she would accept the nomination for reeve if put forward by her fellow councillors.

Milne is the councillor for Division 3.

"I want to make sure we get through with the agreements we have been making with our urban partners," said Milne. "Those agreements are important to the county. I want to make sure we are looking after things like we are supposed to."

Milne said he would bring valuable experience to the next council.

Sayer, who is the councillor for Division 1, says he will outline some of his hopes and plans for the new term in the coming days.

Beattie, who is the councillor for Division 4 and current county reeve, said earlier that his plans for the next term include continuing to work cooperatively with area municipalities and other governments.

Division 6 councillor Ken Heck says he will not be running again.

Nomination day is Sept. 18, when the county's returning office will be accepting all completed nomination forms between 10 a.m. and noon at the county office.

The advanced vote will be held on Oct. 14 and the general election vote will be held on Oct. 16.
