Council given grant update

Mountain View County council has been given an update on grant applications made earlier by the municipality to the Alberta Community Resiliency Program for the Coal Camp Road, Coal Camp Hamlet, and the Sleepy Hollow dike projects.

The review came during a recent regularly scheduled council meeting.

Four years ago the county applied for funding through the program.

“Three of the projects applied for were deemed eligible but remained unfunded for the following four years,” administration said in a briefing note to council. “Alberta Environment and Parks, which administers the grant program, has now returned the applications to the county.

“If the county would like to continue to seek funding for the projects, the reports completed must be revised with current information and resubmitted prior to September 30.”

Administration also provided the following information:

  • Coal Camp Road project -- This consists of constructing a 70-metre deflector to help protect the road from a future flood event. During the 2013 flood, most of the out of bank revetment that had been constructed was exposed, which may threaten the integrity of the road in the future if nothing further is done.

The total estimated cost is $1,073,694, with the grant covering $966,325.

Coal Camp Hamlet -- This project would involve repairing erosion and flood damage to the riverbank in the hamlet, as well as mitigating further damage to the bank in future flood events, which may end up compromising the homes in the hamlet.

In August a letter was received from the residents of Coal Camp Hamlet expressing their concern over the erosion of the bank along the river, which has led to increasing the priority of this project.

The total estimated cost for this project is $1,143,000, with the grant covering $1,028,700.

Sleepy Hollow Dike project -- This involves making repairs and changes to a privately built dike along the Little Red Deer River, as per a Matrix report completed in 2011. The dike protects the Sleepy Hollow subdivision from major flood events.

The total estimated cost for this project is $377,000, with the grant covering $339,300.

Reeve Bruce Beattie says the county will be reapplying for the grants.

“It will be an update of the applications,” he said. “We still want to proceed with the applications.”
