Youth Programming Facility to receive donated musical equipment

Innisfail youth who attend the Boys and Girls Club of Innisfail will be jammin' the night away on June 13.

Innisfail youth who attend the Boys and Girls Club of Innisfail will be jammin' the night away on June 13.

The monthly jam night, held at the Youth Programming Facility on the second Friday of every month will be a little different this month, with two guitars on stage as well as an amplifier from local musician Tom Lindl.

“We are pleased that Lindl is donating a second guitar for the popular jam night at the Boys and Girls Club of Innisfail,” said Tammy Oliver-McCurdie, manager of Innisfail Family and Community Support Services. “He had already donated a guitar and amp so this helps a lot. We are looking for a set of drums, and other musical instruments to complete our jam night band set still.”

Oilver-McCurdie said the event usually attracts between one- and two-dozen musicians of differing skill levels and the leader, a local musician, organizes them into skill sets.

“Everyone who shows up gets to participate in some way,” said Oliver-McCurdie. “In a typical evening, the kids will do five or six songs and then the stage is open for anyone wanting to perform.”

She added the kids are very supportive of each other and the environment is open and inviting.

“I had spoken to Tammy and Ken one day, and they were just letting me know this was going on at the youth facility,” said Lindl. “They asked me if there was anything I could do to help out. I said I didn't have much time, but I did have an amp that was not being used, so I gave it to them.”

He added the two guitars were also given to him to refurbish and he passed them on to the music program.

“I'm always in favour of promoting music programs for the youth of Innisfail,” said Lindl. “This is a worthwhile program to support and I am glad to be able to help any way I can.

The Boys and Girls Club of Innisfail runs on Wednesdays from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and Friday nights from 6 to 9 p.m.
