Winter Walk Day is coming to Innisfail Feb. 5.

Sponsored by Safe Healthy Active People Everywhere (SHAPE), people of all ages are invited to participate and walk outside for at least 15 minutes on Feb. 5. Participation will be logged and organizations with the most minutes will be recognized provincially. To date, 85,000 individuals have registered across the province.

As part of its mission, SHAPE encourages students to walk or bike to school on a regular basis in an effort to maintain fitness and reduce traffic congestion near school zones. They also offer safety programs such as Walking Buddies or Walking School Buses, which provide support and/or supervision to students while walking to school.

ìWe encourage people to register for the winter walk day,î said Monica Murray, the town's recreation programmer. ìIt's good exercise and a great way to get out and enjoy the fresh air.î

Dressing for the weather will be important, added Murray.

ìWe expect it to be nice, but participants should dress for conditions,î said Murray. ìIt might mean dressing in layers, wearing tuques, or whatever. Good footwear with good tread is always recommended with our freeze-thaw going on now.î

Everyone is welcome to join in, including schools, seniors' centres, commuters, individuals and families.

To register, or for more information on SHAPE programs in Innisfail you can go to www.winterwalkday.com. Alternately citizens can phone 780-406-8530 as well.
