Trial continues in harassment case

A former Innisfail RCMP officer has been on trial since mid-January in the Red Deer Court of Queen's Bench.

Const. Hoa Dong La is on trial for 15 charges stemming from alleged extortion, criminal harassment and mortgage fraud incidents around Innisfail, Bowden and other communities around Alberta.

Crown prosecutor Leah Boyd, from the specialized prosecutions office in Edmonton, said the trial is scheduled to conclude Feb. 9 or 10 but that date depends on if the defence is calling evidence or not. Defence does not need to give advance notice of their intentions with regards to evidence.

Boyd said the case is "moving along." Witnesses who have testified so far have had to do with the Crown's evidence on the extortion and criminal harassment charges. Boyd said the witnesses scheduled for Jan. 30 to Feb. 3 have to do with the mortgage fraud charges.

A charter argument relating to search and seizure took more time than the Crown or defence was expecting, Boyd said.

The trial is before a judge alone. Justice David Gates is presiding.
