Town seeks to co-host annual Seniors' Week

Innisfail is aiming for the first time to be one of four communities in Alberta to co-host the provincial launch of Seniors' Week.

Innisfail is aiming for the first time to be one of four communities in Alberta to co-host the provincial launch of Seniors' Week.

The annual celebration in Alberta has been running for the past decade and this year Seniors' Week will begin June 2 and run until June 8.

On Jan. 13, Tammy Oliver-McCurdie, Innisfail's FCSS manager, made a presentation to town council to seek its support to co-host the event. Council agreed to offer its support, which will include writing a letter on behalf of FCSS' application for a grant of $10,000 for the local launch of Seniors' Week.

Oliver-McCurdie said the winning communities are eligible for a provincial grant of up to $10,000.

She told council the intent is to use the Innisfail Library Learning Centre as the venue to host the launch.

ìI think it is big enough. If we find that we need a larger site then what we will do is change that,î said Oliver-McCurdie, adding there is a list of community partners willing to assist in the event.

ìIt would put us on the map. It would highlight the seniors in the community for the contributions they have made in the past and continue to make,î said Oliver-McCurdie. ìI think it would be a great way to celebrate Seniors' Week.î

Oliver-McCurdie said if Innisfail is selected as a co-host a budget will be created and specific events for the week will then be decided.

Alberta Health will make its selection of four communities to co-host this year's Seniors' Week at the end of this month.
