École John Wilson Elementary School has a new principal.

Jason Drent, an education fixture in Sundre for more than 13 years, has stepped into the role of principal, while Jackie Taylor has moved up to Chinook's Edge School Division office to the position of division principal.

“I am very excited to have the opportunity to lead John Wilson students and teachers through the final modernization process,” said Drent. “In spite of the noise and construction going on around us, we have to focus on teaching as teachers and provide an atmosphere where students can learn.”

The new principal noted that upgrades to John Wilson will continue throughout the year, and classes would have to be moved at some time during construction, but, he added, it will be worth the effort.

Drent was quick to point out that with the promotion of Taylor he took the opportunity to move to John Wilson when it was offered to him.

“I've worked with Drent for a long time,” said Allan Tarnoczi, associate superintendent of corporate services. “He will be an asset to the Innisfail school.”

While in Sundre, Drent said it was an opportunity to advance his learning about teaching and the education system, which ultimately helped him serve as principal over the last five years.

“When I taught in Sundre I loved the small-town feel the town had, and coming into the elementary school here, I feel the same thing,” added Drent. “For myself as an educator, that is very important. My job is made easier when we can build communication and trust with the kids and the parents.”

In the meantime, Taylor will serve at Chinook's Edge School Division office in a support role for school-based administrators and instructional leaders as a natural extension of her expertise gained over her teaching and principal career in Penhold and Innisfail. But leaving John Wilson Elementary School was still tough for Taylor.

“I loved working at John Wilson,” said Taylor, who has taught for 23 years. “The kids were great, the teachers were excellent, and the community was very supportive. It was difficult to leave what I loved so much, but when I found out that Jason was taking my place, we worked together to make the transition easier. I am confident he will be an incredible leader for the school.”

Kurt Sacher, Chinook's Edge superintendent of schools, was pleased that Drent was going to bring his energy and proven track record to John Wilson.

“He listens well, and is very student centred,” said Sacher of the young principal, who also balances support for his teachers at the same time. “Just like Jackie did, he brings a love of young people to the school, which is vital.”

Sacher added he was “thrilled for the school and community” with Drent coming in to lead the institution, adding, “John Wilson teachers and students are in good hands.”
