New gear for firefighters

Town council has agreed to spend $24,000 for the Innisfail Fire Department to acquire new personal protective equipment.

Town council has agreed to spend $24,000 for the Innisfail Fire Department to acquire new personal protective equipment.

By granting the request from Dan Ross, the town's fire chief, firefighters will have eight new sets of bunker gear and 10 helmets delivered some time in the summer.

Council was told an inventory from last March concluded that the department's current personal protective gear of eight sets of bunker gear and 10 helmets did not comply with the standards set by the National Fire Protection Association.

The inspection concluded that four sets of gear were out of date, another two were questionable, two others are scheduled to expire this year, and one other was contaminated with oil.

Council heard 10 of the fire department's firefighting helmets have been in service more than 10 years.

The $24,000 approved by council for the purchase of the new firefighting protective equipment will be drawn from the town's 2014 Contingency Fund.
