Multiplex ice rates increasing

Rink users at the Penhold Multiplex will be facing higher fees during the 2014/2015 season after a recent council meeting passed a motion to come closer to cost recovery.

Rink users at the Penhold Multiplex will be facing higher fees during the 2014/2015 season after a recent council meeting passed a motion to come closer to cost recovery.

Not all fees will increase, but select rates will see a small rise after a review of ice rates in surrounding communities in Central Alberta and a comparison to the Central Alberta Recreation Association (CARA).

Daytime rate rental will remain the same at $99 an hour plus GST, while prime usage rates will rise to $200 an hour plus GST, non-local camps and adult fees to $219 an hour plus GST, and a marginal increase to $175 an hour plus GST, for non-prime-time usage. Spring and summer ice rates will rise $11 an hour to $210 an hour plus GST for adults, and $230 an hour plus GST for non-local camp rates.

“We have to act on the recommendation of administration,” said Mayor Dennis Cooper. “Meetings with user groups are going on soon and we have to see how they will react to increases.”

Meanwhile, meeting room rates increased from $10 an hour to $39 an hour plus GST.

A motion was put forth to not increase room rental rates by councillor Kathy Sitter but it was defeated.
