Local dancers prepare for Christmas performance

Innisfail dancers will show off acrobatic, jazz, lyrical and ballet skills during an upcoming Christmas performance in Red Deer.

Joy's School of Dance, made up of members from Innisfail, Olds and other parts of Central Alberta are getting ready to perform Narnia at the Red Deer City Centre Stage Dec. 21 and 22.

“There are different components to it,” said Jade Grimes, a dancer. “There are different ages involved and a lot of different styles,” she said.

“It's just so much fun,” said Sidney Lischer of putting it all together.

“Everyone really suits their character.”

Besides the typical characters one would expect in Narnia such as Edmund, Lucy and Mr. Tumnus, dancers will also take on character roles such as snow, fire and animals.

“The props are really well done and the costumes are really good,” said Grimes.

Joy McIlwain, of Joy's School of Dance, said the school chose to go with Narnia to move away and offer something different then the traditional Christmas performance of the Nutcracker.

“If audience members know the story they can follow,” she said of the performance.

The girls said the show is well suited for everyone.

“There's a little violence,” said Grimes. “And little boys always like that.”

Lischer said there is a sign language part that everyone seems to be impressed with.

The show will run at 2 and 7 p.m. on Dec. 21 and at 3 p.m. Dec. 22. Tickets are $20 for adults and $17.50 for children and seniors. Tickets are available through Black Knight Tickets at 1-800-661-8793.
