Telus is getting closer to starting on a new tower in Penhold.

When asked about information that indicated a site had been chosen, a Telus spokesperson said establishing a lease is in process.

“We are looking to finalize a lease agreement,” said Chris Gerritsen, manager of community engagement for Telus.

He said the process to finalize a lease is a long one with several steps that have to be followed. “We are still aiming for the tower to go live in 2012,” Gerritsen said.

Mayor Dennis Cooper said he'd heard the land being considered is on the south end of Penhold but the town hasn't received confirmation from Telus.

Telus announced its commitment to constructing a tower in Penhold in late 2011. A letter campaign was held in Penhold starting in August of 2011 after council received complaints about cellphone reception in town.
