History was made in Penhold with the grand opening of Hawkridge Market Square on May 23 with business owners and members of the public in attendance.

“We're kicking off Hawkridge Market Square in a unique way,” said Penhold mayor Dennis Cooper. “Our first phase really is a family care core with medical, dental, drugstore and a Subway restaurant. Later on, with the opening of Penhold Family Foods in June, we will have a strong base for Penhold citizens to draw on.”

The crowd of over 100 enjoyed hotdogs, refreshments and grand opening cakes from Penhold Dental Care and Parkland Medical Clinic. Balloons were handed out for the kids and draws for prizes were held as well. Community members aged one to 85 showed up to support the new shopping centre.

“I remember when this area was filled with cottonwood trees,” said Penhold councillor Mike Yargeau. “We used to have a tree fort right behind the building on the southeast corner.”

Cooper and Yargeau spoke of what Hawkridge will look like in 20 years.

“It really wasn't that long ago the area behind us was a bare field, and now there are hundreds of houses,” said Cooper. “Once the grocery store opens, and the mostly finished building to the west is filled and operative, this will be a major draw for the 8,000 cars that go by. With this hub, we will be able to capture their business for Penhold.”

He further added Hawkridge Market Square is the culmination of years of planning and growth.

Sharon Christmann of Innisfail took in the festivities.

“This is an ideal location for Penhold to have a mall,” said Christmann. “We are very anxious to see the grocery store open and what kinds of goods and prices they will have.”

Steve Busse's father, Dennis was proud of his son's IDA Pharmacy, which is now officially open.

“He picked the right location at the right time to open up,” said Dennis. “We are very proud of him and know this will be great for everyone.”
