Guilty plea in crash case

Tyler James Stevens, 29, pleaded guilty to four charges of criminal negligence causing death and one charge of criminal negligence.

Stevens was facing 15 other charges. Those charges include four counts of impaired driving causing death, one charge of impaired driving causing bodily harm, four charges of driving with a blood-alcohol level over the legal limit causing an accident causing death, one charge of driving with a blood-alcohol level over the legal limit causing an accident causing bodily harm and five charges of failing or refusing to provide a sample after causing an accident causing bodily harm or death.

The rest of the charges will be spoken to when Stevens appears for sentencing, scheduled Jan. 4, 2013 in Red Deer. Chief Crown prosecutor Anders Quist confirmed a pre-sentence report is being prepared to assist the judge with sentencing by providing more information about Stevens.

Stevens was charged after a crash March 4 on the QEII left four people dead and one person injured.

It was alleged in an RCMP press release issued at the time that Stevens was the sole driver of a Range Rover travelling northbound in the southbound lanes of the highway when it collided with a Dodge Journey that was carrying five passengers, Filipino hotel workers who were living in the Edmonton area.
