Get active contest gets underway

Innisfail is rolling out a program aimed at getting people rolling off their couches and into the outdoors.

Innisfail is rolling out a program aimed at getting people rolling off their couches and into the outdoors.

This is the first year the town has started a competition that's part of the Alberta Parks and Recreation Association initiative encouraging people to use the green spaces in their area.

“Innisfail is a nice town and we want people to utilize what we have to offer,” said Brittany Baird, a camp counsellor for the town who stepped up to run the competition. Expected to run into July, residents are eligible to enter one of three categories all aimed at enjoying the great outdoors: the individual, family and photography.

The individual category asks people to track their activity for a month on a calendar.

“It doesn't have to be outside, just any activity,” said Baird, using running on a treadmill as an example.

“As long as they're doing something, and not sitting on a couch.”

The family category is similar but provides a list of 30 activities for families to do over a course of a summer month, such as swimming or making or flying a kite.

The photo contest asks people to take pictures of Innisfail's beauty. A waiver needs to be filled out for that contest and can be found at the Town of Innisfail website.

“This is completely new,” said Baird, who explained promotion to get outdoors started last year but this is the first year with prizes. Prizes include a three-month membership at Platinum Fitness, person training with Candis Seirfried, a three-month family swim pass, a five-in-one activity kit, photography books and frames, and soccer balls, Frisbees, shirts and water bottles.

“The goal is to get people active and outside when it's nice out. I hope people take advantage of the competition.”
