Innisfail's influenza clinics are open for business.

With clinics and pharmacies administering flu shots starting Oct. 20, pharmacists and other health professionals in Innisfail have reported a strong response to the vaccination season.

“We have only been open a couple of days and compared to previous years, I find that demand is higher,” said Bruce Winston, IDA/Sandstone pharmacist. “For the first two days, between two of our three pharmacies, we have given close to 50 shots.”

Winston added that both pharmacists at the new IDA location are certified to give shots and they will administer vaccinations upon request.

Brent Jackson of Jackson's Pharmasave has also noted a steady request for vaccinations at its location, which does not take appointments but operates on a walk-in basis.

“Our pharmacy will be busy with flu shots,” said Jackson. “We have a good supply of vaccine on hand and we will reorder as necessary. As long as people come in for their shots, we will have it available.”

According to Alberta Health Services, the single best way to protect against the flu is to get vaccinated every year.

Nasal mist vaccinations will be available for kids from the ages of two through five, or two through 17 if the individuals have cardiac problems, diabetes, asthma or chronic diseases. Flu shots will be available at all locations.

Flu clinics will be held in town at the Innisfail Alliance Church on Oct. 24 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Nov. 3 from 1 to 7 p.m. and Dec. 1 from 3 to 7 p.m. on a drop-in basis. Other clinics have not yet been announced for the Innisfail area.

Every pharmacy in Innisfail will be providing the influenza vaccination at no charge. Contact your local pharmacist for details.
