The Town of Penhold is going family-friendly during National Family Week from October 5 to 12.

Julie Dallaire, the town's community services manager, along with partner organizations Penhold S.H.A.R.E.S., Red Deer & District Family and Community Support Services (FCSS), the Penhold & District Library, Penhold Crossing Secondary School, and the Penhold Seniors Drop-In Centre, will be celebrating families and providing opportunities for all ages in Penhold.

“We have a busy week planned,” said Dallaire of the six events during the week. “Our agenda includes a free family skate on Sunday, October 5 at the multiplex from 4 to 5:15 p.m. with free hot chocolate and coffee, as well as an event aimed at cooking within a budget workshop to be held at the new high school home economics area by the cafeteria on October 7 from 7 to 9 p.m. People will have to register but they will be able to take home a few freezer meals from the evening.”

Other events scheduled include a free family photo night on Oct. 8 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Penhold & District Library where families will receive a free 5- by 7-inch photo, as well as craft time.

“We want to celebrate Thanksgiving as a community on October 9,” said Dallaire. “Along with the seniors drop-in centre, we will be serving up a free traditional turkey dinner from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Penhold Memorial Hall for citizens of Penhold and area.”

The Penhold Community Church will host a special community service from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 12 with coffee and dessert to follow.

Later in the day, the regular free family skate at the multiplex starts and will run from 4 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. until the spring of next year.

While not related to family week, the Penhold Fire Department will be hosting an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. with hotdogs, interactive displays, and activities for children aged five to 15 to celebrate Fire Prevention Week.

“Our week will be busy but we want to provide families a reason to call Penhold home,” said Dallaire.
