The federal government swooped in Feb. 15 to lend a hand to a swimming pool that's been struggling in its old age.
Earl Dreeshen, member of Parliament for Red Deer, announced $227,135 worth of funding under the federal government's Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund for the Innisfail Aquatic Centre.
The money will be used to replace the water filter and treatment systems, pumps and light fixtures in the building that is more than a quarter century old.
ìFacilities such as the Innisfail Aquatic Centre are the foundation of our communities,î he said, during the mid-day event. ìThey bring families and residents together and in addition to adding to the quality of life of our communities, they also generate economic activity and jobs.î
The initiative is part of the government's Economic Action Plan meant to spur the economy through investments in infrastructure facelifts.
ìThese energy efficient upgrades will generate savings,î he said.
Mayor Jim Romane said the pool is an integral part of the community, offering scuba diving lessons and beach bashes, and giving groups like Innisfail Dolphins Swim Club, Hurricanes Water Polo Club, Cottonwood Kayak Club and local schools a place to learn and have fun.
ìIt offers a variety of affordable alternatives for youth and adults alike,î he said. ìMost of us have fond memories from within these walls.î
Over the past few weeks, pool staff have had their hands full trying to balance pH levels in the hot tub and get the steam room up and running.
Terry Welsh, Innisfail's director of community and protective services, confirmed the federal funds are above and beyond previous repairs to the facility during the yearly maintenance shutdown in December and additional funding approved thereafter by council.
